Jakarta’s Mixed Couples: Many Indonesian Women Marry American Men
Jakarta. Jakarta’s civil registry office Dukcapil revealed Tuesday that many women in the city had tied the knot with American men as mixed couples bloomed in the buzzing city.
The Jakarta Dukcapil reported that 158 Indonesian women who registered their marriage between 2020 and August 2025 had married American men. International couples involving Singaporean guys were also the second-most common. The office received 132 marriage registrations from such couples over the same period. Followed by Germans (120), Chinese (113), and Australians (103). Some 99 Indonesian women also chose Malaysian husbands, while 55 others reported having wedded South Koreans.
Witri Yenny, who heads the civil registration office in Jakarta, pointed out that Indonesian men married to foreigners usually preferred Asians.
“[Indonesian men] mainly married Singaporeans,” Witri said, commenting on the transnational wedding trend, as reported by the state news agency Antara.
According to the civil registration office, 58 Singaporean women had said “I do” to Indonesian men. About 53 Indonesian males registering their marriage reported tying the knot with Chinese nationals, and some 47 others have Japanese wives. The rest are as follows: Malaysians (41), South Koreans (36), Australians (22) and Filipinas (22), among others.
Witri reported that her office had recorded 1,952 mixed marriages between 2020 and August 2025.
“So on average, we would record around 250-300 [mixed couples] each year,” Witri said.
"Don't forget to register your marriage [to Dukcapil] if you do get married to a foreigner. ... It's an important process to provide certainty to the child's status."
According to Witri, any child born from a mixed marriage can hold dual citizenship until the age of 18. Once they turn 18 or are married, the child must pick a nationality.
