Jakarta's Air Quality Among Worst in the World, Residents Advised to Wear Masks Outdoors
Jakarta. Jakarta's air quality has deteriorated to unhealthy levels, ranking as the second worst in the world. Residents are advised to wear masks when outdoors.
As of Friday at 6:34 a.m., Jakarta's Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 165, with PM2.5 particle concentration at 75 micrograms per cubic meter. This level is 15 times higher than the World Health Organization's (WHO) annual air quality guideline.
PM2.5 refers to airborne particles smaller than 2.5 micrometers, which can be harmful to human health, sensitive animal groups, and vegetation, besides impacting aesthetic values.
The real-time air quality monitoring website ranks Jakarta second only to Kinshasa, Congo, which has an AQI of 183.
Due to the poor air quality, residents are recommended to avoid outdoor activities, wear masks outside, keep windows closed to avoid dirty air, and use air purifiers.
On Friday morning, Jakarta's Environmental and Cleanliness Information System reported moderate PM2.5 pollution levels at five monitoring sites: Kelapa Gading (AQI 76), Kebon Jeruk (AQI 68), HI Roundabout (AQI 63), Lubang Buaya (AQI 79), and Jagakarsa (AQI 90). Moderate air quality levels do not harm humans or animals but can affect sensitive plants. Conversely, unhealthy air quality poses risks to human and animal health, while also potentially damaging plants and diminishing aesthetic appeal.
Asep Kuswanto, Head of Jakarta's Environment Agency (DLH), announced the launch of the Jakarta Berjaga movement in April, urging residents to walk 7,500 steps daily. This initiative supports Jakarta's goal to become a global city and aims to promote a healthier lifestyle while enhancing air quality.
"The Jakarta Provincial Government is dedicated to creating a high-quality living environment," Asep emphasized. He expressed optimism that integrating these campaigns will yield positive outcomes for Jakarta's residents by promoting a healthy lifestyle and enhancing environmental awareness.
