Jakarta. Indonesia's campaign in the mixed doubles category of the 2025 Japan Open came to an end after two of its pairs were knocked out in the second round

Rehan Naufal Kusharjanto and Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja fell to Hong Kong’s third-seeded Tang Chun Man and Tse Ying Suet in straight games, 17-21, 19-21. Gloria admitted their performance was far from optimal, with unforced errors costing them critical points.

“We made too many unforced errors today. When receiving serves, we struggled to switch into attack. Our shots were predictable, and our defense was off, especially in the middle area between us,” Gloria said after the match.

Rehan acknowledged that he lacked composure on the court, leading to overthinking during key moments.

“I wasn’t calm; I overthought things. We tried our best, but luck wasn’t on our side. It wasn’t even about reading the opponent’s strength anymore. Even though it was our first match against Tang/Tse as a pair, Glo and I have faced them many times before. Today, they were simply better prepared,” Rehan said.

Earlier, another Indonesian mixed doubles pair, Amri Syahnawi and Nita Violina Marwah, also exited the tournament after a hard-fought loss to Japan’s Hiroki Midorikawa and Natsu Saito, 21-23, 21-18, 14-21.

Amri said they were able to match their opponents’ playing style but struggled with consistency during critical moments, especially after failing to convert a game point in the opening game.

“In terms of playing pattern, we were already there, but the opponents were very patient and persistent. They rarely made unforced errors, and every shot they played had great quality,” Amri said.

He also added that a physical issue affected his performance in the deciding game.

“The back of my right foot hurt, so my movement wasn’t as free as in the first two games,” he added.

Nita stressed the need to strengthen their competitive mindset and maintain consistency during long rallies.

“We tried everything we could, but we need to improve on those crucial points. There was even a service error at a key moment that shouldn’t have happened,” Nita said.

“During rallies, we must stay focused and patient in directing the shuttle,” she added.
