Indonesia Launches New E-Passport with UV Security Ink
Jakarta. The Directorate General of Immigration has begun issuing a new generation of electronic passports featuring advanced multicolor invisible fluorescent ink that glows under ultraviolet light, enhancing the security of Indonesia’s travel documents.
Acting Director General of Immigration Yuldi Yusman said on Thursday that the enhanced feature, introduced in early November 2025, aims to improve the passport’s security and reinforce the international standing of the Indonesian passport.
“The Directorate General of Immigration continues to enhance service quality, ensuring our passports remain secure and trusted worldwide,” Yuldi said in a statement. “With this new feature, we want to provide greater safety and comfort for Indonesians traveling abroad.”
He added that passports with the previous security design will continue to be issued until existing stocks are depleted. Holders of older passports do not need to replace them early, as they remain valid until their expiration date.
Yuldi said the gradual rollout ensures smooth service continuity for passport applicants both domestically and abroad.
Beyond being a travel document, the Indonesian passport also embodies national identity through its design. Each page features illustrations of Indonesia’s cultural and natural heritage, an effort to promote the country’s cultural diplomacy around the world.
According to Yuldi, the new invisible fluorescent ink not only enhances security but also highlights the passport’s visual representation of Indonesia’s cultural and natural richness.
“A strong passport reflects a strong nation,” he said. “We hope this innovation adds value to every journey taken by Indonesian citizens across the globe.”
