Forget the Rumors -- Bali’s Kuta and Legian Buzz as Holiday Crowds Return
Badung, Bali. Anyone saying Bali is quiet clearly hasn’t been to Kuta or Legian lately.
Despite viral social media posts claiming tourists were skipping the island this holiday season, Bali’s main tourist areas were packed on Christmas Day, with crowds of both foreign and domestic visitors returning in force.
The change was immediately visible at I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, where the international arrivals hall was buzzing again. Tour guides holding name boards lined up at the exit, a sharp contrast to online chatter suggesting travelers were choosing Yogyakarta over Bali for the year-end break.
Ema, who works for a travel services company, admitted she was initially worried after hearing reports of weak bookings linked to extreme weather and recent flood news. “But now guests are arriving to celebrate Christmas 2025 and New Year 2026,” she said.
Hotel workers are seeing the same trend. Hilal, who works in hospitality, said occupancy rates have been climbing since Dec. 20, with arrivals expected to peak through Dec. 27. Many foreign tourists, he added, are planning to fly home on Jan. 2 after ringing in the New Year on the island.
Airport operator Angkasa Pura Indonesia recorded strong passenger traffic into Bali, with Singapore remaining the busiest route at 44,089 passengers, followed by Kuala Lumpur with 31,350 and Perth with 22,341. Long-haul travelers from places like the UK, Abu Dhabi, and China were also arriving.
On the ground, the crowds were impossible to miss. Traffic in Kuta slowed to a crawl from Patih Jelantik Street through to Legian Road, clogged with out-of-town cars and tourists weaving through on rented motorbikes. By late afternoon, the flow of people moved in one direction — toward Kuta Beach, where sunset remains Bali’s most reliable crowd-puller.
As the sun dipped, nightlife along Legian kicked off early. Lines formed outside nightclubs even before sunset, signaling that the party season was officially back.
Local tourism workers say the rebound comes as weather conditions improve and holiday momentum builds. “Visits slowed earlier because of bad weather and flood concerns,” said Erna, who works in the area. “Now travelers are coming back, and I hope this positive trend continues for Bali.”
Bali Governor I Wayan Koster also pushed back hard against claims that the island was empty. “That’s simply not true,” he said, adding that foreign tourist arrivals are averaging about 17,000 per day. Total foreign visits have reached 6.7 million so far this year, up from 6.3 million in 2024.
Koster said arrivals are expected to keep rising through New Year’s Eve, with foreign tourist numbers during the year-end holiday up about 8% compared with last year.
However, he acknowledged that hotel occupancy has not surged at the same pace. Many visitors, he said, are staying in short-term rentals booked through platforms like Airbnb, which do not always contribute to local hotel and restaurant taxes. Even so, hotel occupancy in areas such as Nusa Dua currently ranges between 60% and 80%.
Quiet island? Not this week.
