Pertamina Discovers New Oil Well in Sumatra with 3,400 bpd Potential
Jakarta. State-owned energy company Pertamina on Tuesday announced the discovery of a new oil well at the Adera Field in South Sumatra, with potential production reaching 3,442 barrels per day.
The well, coded ABB-143 (U1), was identified after oil-bearing formations were detected during exploration activities, said Djudjuwanto, General Manager of Pertamina Exploration and Production (PEP), Pertamina’s upstream oil and gas subsidiary.
“This well is expected to help increase our oil production capacity,” Djudjuwanto said in a statement.
The discovery comes as the government targets national oil production of 1 million barrels per day by 2029.
According to PEP, the find was the result of an integrated analysis of 3D seismic data collected since 2023 by its geology, geophysics, reservoir, and production teams at the Adera Field.
More detailed seismic interpretation enabled the team to more accurately map the direction and distribution of oil-bearing reservoirs, significantly improving drilling success rates, Djudjuwanto said.
“Technological innovation and the application of new techniques continue to drive PEP’s performance in supporting national energy security,” he added.
Separately, Pertamina spokesperson Muhammad Baron said the company has allocated substantial capital expenditure to upstream operations to support large-scale and innovative drilling programs, which have contributed to new discoveries and increased national oil and gas output.
However, Baron did not disclose the exact amount of funds earmarked for exploration activities.
