Jakarta. Rupiah strengthened against the US dollar on Friday, closing up 0.13% at Rp 16,819 per dollar by evening Jakarta time, according to data from Bloomberg.

The local currency had weakened earlier in the day. Spot market data showed the rupiah sliding 34 points, or 0.2%, to Rp 16,832 per dollar in morning trade, while the dollar index edged up 0.02% to 98.95.

On Thursday afternoon, the rupiah also closed weaker by 18 points against the greenback, after briefly touching Rp 16,798 per dollar during the session.

Currency analyst Ibrahim Assuaibi said the rupiah’s movement remains vulnerable to upcoming US economic releases, which could reinforce expectations of a stronger US economy.

“The market’s next focus is the weekly Initial Jobless Claims to be released tonight, followed by the December Nonfarm Payrolls report on Friday,” Ibrahim said in a statement in Jakarta on Friday.

He added that the outcomes of these data releases would be key in shaping the rupiah’s near-term direction.

External sentiment has also been clouded by geopolitical tensions between the United States and Venezuela, after US President Donald Trump signaled plans to take control of the South American country’s oil industry, fueling risk aversion in emerging markets.

Domestically, the rupiah continues to face pressure despite Bank Indonesia reporting a rise in Indonesia’s foreign exchange reserves to $156.5 billion at the end of December 2025, which analysts say has so far provided limited support to the currency.
