Indonesia's Budget Deficit Hits 0.70% of GDP at End-May
Jakarta. Indonesia announced Friday that its budget deficit had reached 0.70% of gross domestic product (GDP) as of end-May 2026.
The deficit stood at around Rp 180.4 trillion ($10 billion), according to Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa. However, the budget shortfall was larger compared to the same five-month period last year, when the deficit reached 0.09% of GDP. For 2026, Indonesia has targeted a deficit of 2.68%.
“With an 0.70% deficit, our budget should be very safe,” Purbaya told a press conference in Jakarta.
State receipts hit Rp 1,185 trillion (around $65 billion), equivalent to 37.6% of the annual target. This represents a 19.1 percent year-on-year (yoy) growth. Some of that money was tax receipts at Rp 834.4 trillion (approximately $46.3 billion). Customs and excise reached around Rp 123.8 trillion ($6.9 billion), while non-tax state revenue hit Rp 226.4 trillion ($12.5 billion). There were also Rp 400 billion ($22.2 million) in grants.
“Spending grew 34.4% yoy to Rp 1,365.4 trillion [around $75.7 billion] by the end of May. We have always wanted to speed up spending,” Purbaya said.
