Indonesia Unworried by Trump’s 25% Tariff on Iran’s Trading Partners
Jakarta. Indonesia has chosen not to worry about US President Donald Trump’s tariff threats on Iran’s trading partners, citing that Jakarta does not trade much with Tehran.
Trump has slapped 25% tariffs on Iran’s trading partners in response to the protests in the Middle Eastern country. He has yet to reveal the details on whether the new tariffs only target the countries that heavily trade with Iran or include the ones that export in smaller numbers. Haryo Limanseto, the spokesperson at the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, told the Jakarta Globe on Monday that “Indonesia’s transactions with Iran were not significant”.
“Indonesia is not too worried. We are focusing on wrapping up the [trade deal] negotiations with the US,” Haryo said.
The latest available data by the Trade Ministry reported that Indonesian exports to Iran totaled $225 million between January and November 2025. Indonesia enjoyed a $217.3 million surplus over the said period. The Southeast Asian country mainly exported fruits ($78.7 million) and automobiles ($27.9 million).
At present, Indonesia is at the final stage of reaching a trade deal with Washington. Last April, Trump unveiled 32% tariffs on Indonesia, citing trade deficit concerns. The US reported a nearly $18 billion goods deficit with Indonesia in 2024. After months of negotiations, Trump agreed to cut the tariffs to 19%, and further down to 0% on palm oil, which cannot grow naturally on American soil. President Prabowo Subianto is set to travel to Washington later this month to sign the deal.
Trump unveiled his latest tariff assault on a Truth Social post on Tuesday morning.
“Effective immediately, any country doing business with the Islamic Republic of Iran will pay a tariff of 25% on any and all business being done with the US,” Trump wrote in his post.
He went on to say that this order is “final and conclusive”.
Indonesian business lobby Apindo did not immediately respond to the Globe’s request for comments.
Iran is witnessing its biggest anti-government protests in years. US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) reported that the death toll had reached 646 people. Iran is also stepping up its deadly crackdown on nationwide demonstrations, which prompted Trump to threaten military action against Tehran.
