Indonesia Targets Cement Industry Decarbonization by 2050
Jakarta. The Industry Ministry has unveiled plans to develop a roadmap for the cement industry to achieve decarbonization by 2050.
"We aim to complete this roadmap by 2024 or 2025, including the necessary provisions within the ministerial regulation so that it can be implemented from 2025 to 2050," said Putu Nadi Astuti, Director of Cement, Ceramics, and Non-Metallic Mineral Processing Industries at the Ministry, in Jakarta on Tuesday.
Astuti explained that the roadmap will outline the technical steps for reducing carbon emissions in the cement industry, setting decarbonization targets at regular intervals and action plans to achieve net zero emissions (NZE).
Key strategies in the roadmap include reducing the clinker-to-cement ratio, transitioning to alternative fuels, enhancing energy efficiency, developing innovative technologies, and formulating government policies to support the NZE program.
Although the roadmap will be officially implemented next year, the cement industry is already making efforts to reduce emissions. These efforts include energy efficiency measures using biomass energy and the adoption of technologies that facilitate decarbonization.
Astuti stressed the importance of this roadmap for Indonesia, as the cement sector is a major contributor to global carbon emissions. Research by Chatham House indicates that cement production accounts for 8 percent of global carbon emissions.
Additionally, Astuti highlighted that the decarbonization initiative for Indonesia's cement industry could improve the competitiveness of the national industry. The Ministry aims to achieve decarbonization in production processes by introducing environmentally friendly products, such as green cement.
