BPS December Data: Gold Prices, Airfares Lift Indonesia’s November Inflation
Jakarta. Indonesia’s inflation picked up modestly in November, lifted by rising global gold prices, higher airfares, and tighter supplies of key horticultural commodities, the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) said on Monday.
BPS Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics Pudji Ismartini said the headline Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 0.17 percent month-on-month. Annual inflation reached 2.72 percent, while the year-to-date figure stood at 2.27 percent.
Pudji noted that November’s price movements were shaped by several developments: a persistent rally in global gold prices, the end of promotional airline fares from October, stronger year-end travel demand, lower shallot production, which apparently reached its lowest level in 2025, and high-wave warnings that disrupted distribution in several coastal regions.
The personal care and other services group was the biggest contributor to monthly inflation, rising 1.21 percent and adding 0.09 percentage points to the headline number. The main driver was gold jewelry, which continued its long upward streak with a 3.99 percent increase and contributed 0.08 percentage points.
Airfares also climbed as promotions expired and demand increased, contributing 0.04 percentage points to inflation. Shallots, fresh fish, and carrots added additional upward pressure.
Even so, several food items helped soften the increase. Broiler chicken, rice, and red chili recorded deflation, while eggs and potatoes also posted slight declines. Rice prices fell 0.59 percent, with 28 provinces reporting deflation, continuing the pattern seen since November 2024.
All inflation components rose in November:
- Core inflation: 0.17 percent, driven by gold jewelry
- Administered prices: 0.24 percent, led by airfares
- Volatile foods: 0.02 percent, pushed by shallots and vegetables
Regionally, 28 provinces recorded inflation, with Papua posting the highest increase at 1.69 percent, while Aceh saw the steepest deflation at 0.67 percent.
The transport group continued its historical pattern of rising prices ahead of the year-end holidays. Airfares jumped 6.02 percent, reinforcing their role as a key contributor to monthly inflation.
Food items also remained influential. Shallots and carrots saw renewed price increases, consistent with seasonal trends, while some commodities like broiler chicken, red chili, and eggs reversed earlier gains and helped cap inflation.
On a yearly basis, inflation was mainly driven by the food, beverage, and tobacco group, which rose 4.25 percent and contributed 1.22 percentage points to the overall figure. Red chili was the largest contributor within this group, followed by gold jewelry among non-food items.
All provinces posted annual inflation, with Riau recording the highest at 4.27 percent and North Sulawesi the lowest at 0.65 percent.
Pudji summarized that November’s inflation remained under control, with gold jewelry and airfares driving monthly gains, while food prices, particularly rice and chicken, continued to provide relief.
