Bank Indonesia Targets 60 Million QRIS Users in 2026 as Cross-Border Payments Expand
Jakarta. Bank Indonesia (BI) is targeting 60 million users of the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) in 2026 as part of efforts to accelerate payment digitalization and expand cross-border interconnectivity, Governor Perry Warjiyo said on Monday.
QRIS currently has 58 million users and around 40 million participating merchants. Of the targeted 60 million users next year, BI expects approximately 45 million to come from merchants, MSMEs and young consumers.
“The target is for QRIS to surpass 60 million users next year,” Perry said during a talk show in Jakarta.
Perry noted that BI is simultaneously expanding QR cross-border linkages. After establishing interoperability with Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand, QR Indonesia has now been integrated with Japan. The next step is enabling Japanese tourists to use Japanese QR platforms directly in Indonesia.
BI is also preparing digital-payment integration with China, including the technical process of harmonizing the language standards used in Chinese QR systems.
“Once the two languages are unified, that is what we will link to QRIS,” Perry explained.
Beyond Japan and China, BI plans to pilot QR interconnection with South Korea and India, while also preparing for potential integration with Saudi Arabia, including the possibility of incorporating QRIS into the Nusuk card used by Indonesian hajj and umrah pilgrims.
Separately, QRIS Tap (QRIS without scanning) has recorded Rp 13.8 billion ($838,156) in transaction value from 252,000 transactions since its rollout in March 2025.
Perry added that BI is modernizing the BI-FAST payment service to support the projected surge in digital payments, which is expected to reach $43 billion by 2030. The modernization includes promoting deeper industry collaboration in the development of FAST services, alongside joint innovation with the Indonesian Payment System Association (ASPI).
